Becoming a Qualified Clinical Medical Assistant
This program builds the standard clinical competencies used in medical assisting and prepares you to pursue nationally recognized certification. Completing the program may satisfy the education component of certification eligibility, but you must meet all requirements established by the certifying organization.
The approved program source lists preparation for the following nationally recognized medical assisting certifications: National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). The certifying organization listed is the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
The approved source states that candidates must meet one of the training or experience pathways below in addition to the clinical competency requirements: hold a high school diploma or GED, or be scheduled to earn one within the next 12 months; complete a medical assistant training or education program within the last five years, or complete one year of supervised medical assisting experience within the last three years or two years within the last five years; complete the required clinical medical assisting competencies; and complete 80 to 100 clinical or hands-on hours.

- Complete routine laboratory procedures and collect specimens for testing
- Apply foundational knowledge of pharmacology
- Perform technical aspects of phlebotomy
- Prepare patients for 12-lead EKGs and understand the cardiac life cycle
- Educate patients about their care
- Complete standard clinical medical assisting competencies, including injections, point-of-care testing and patient preparation

- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with common software applications
