What Is the EKG Technician Program?

EKG technicians perform electrocardiograms, commonly called EKGs, to record the heart's electrical activity. They use EKG equipment and interpret rhythm strips to help support the evaluation of a patient's heart health. In this role, you'll apply your knowledge of the heart, EKG technology and rhythm interpretation while supporting patients and other healthcare professionals. The demand for trained EKG technicians is expected to continue growing as healthcare organizations expand cardiovascular services.

EKG technicians support cardiac evaluation in settings where electrocardiograms are performed. Becoming a Qualified EKG Technician

This program builds foundational knowledge in cardiac anatomy, EKG technology and rhythm interpretation while preparing you to pursue the Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential. Certification is awarded separately by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and requires candidates to meet the organization's current eligibility requirements.

This program prepares you to pursue the Certified EKG Technician credential. Completing the program does not automatically award certification or guarantee examination eligibility. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and meet one of the following requirements: complete an EKG technician training or education program within the past five years; have one year of supervised EKG technician work experience within the past three years; or have two years of supervised EKG technician work experience within the past five years. Candidates must also provide evidence that they have successfully performed at least 10 EKGs on live individuals.

Students should review the certifying organization's current eligibility requirements before applying for the examination.
